What are these masks?

What are these masks?

The masks being manufactured for this project cannot be used with COVID patients. They are designed to be a substitute for surgical masks used in Operation Room settings on non-COVID patients. The goal is to help free up the use of CDC-compliant medical masks for the purpose of treating patients with COVID-19 symptoms.

Who is behind this project?

Who is behind this project?

We are professionals in the apparel manufacturing industry with a network of factories and suppliers across the United States. This page is an effort to connect the supply and demand of medical masks that can be used for non-COVID 19 related symptoms. Inquiries can be sent to Shannon Lohr at shannon@factory45.co.

Can you supply 100% cotton fabric or other cotton materials? Please fill out this form.

Questions

Questions

Why have you started this project?

We have seen grass-roots efforts across the country responding to the shortage of masks and supplies. We are taking this effort one step further by identifying which hospitals are in need and then coordinating the shipping of masks from factories that can make them.

Are these masks “legal” / CDC-compliant and will they work?

We are using patterns and templates that have been used in other medical settings and are supplying fabric that surgeons and doctors have said can be used for these items. As stated above, these masks are not suitable for treating patients with COVID-19 symptoms. The goal is to help free up the use of CDC-compliant medical masks for the purpose of treating patients with COVID-19 symptoms.

What is the material being used to make the masks?

Most of the masks will be made from 100% cotton but based on medical research, any cotton materials can be used.

Do you have more resources for sewers?

Yes! Here is a more detailed pattern than the template above.

I’m a home sewer, can I still help?

This project is for factories that can manufacture at least 10,000 units per month — but yes, you can still help! There are already websites set up to coordinate donations from home sewers. Check out WeNeedMasks.org and mask-match.com.

Where will the masks go?

This project will identify the U.S. hospitals in need of masks and then coordinate those shipments with the factories available to make them.

Who can be contacted for inquiries?

All questions can be directed to Shannon Lohr, a professional in the apparel manufacturing industry, at shannon@factory45.co.

Do you have additional resources for mask requests?

Yes! GetPPE.org matches projects for hospitals in need to a volunteer pool of 15,000, and helps track progress to ensure successful outcomes. They’ve partnered with Million Mask Challenge volunteers and students from UC Berkeley School of Public Health to support efforts in keeping our healthcare workers safe.
